The quick release is one of the most frequently handled components in a sim racing setup. Every wheel swap means managing cables, watching for wear, and accepting a small amount of mechanical play over time. With the Simucube 3, Simucube completely rethinks this system through the LightBridge technology built into the Link Quick Release.

How LightBridge works

LightBridge is a contactless transfer system that carries both electrical power and data between the base and the steering wheel — with no pins, sockets, or cables inside the quick release itself. Energy and signals pass through induction and optical transmission across the QR mating surface, entirely without physical contact.

In practice: the wheel slots onto the base, and that's it. No cable to plug in during a rushed configuration change, zero contact wear over time, and an instant connection the moment the two pieces meet.

A rethought mechanical lock

Beyond the wireless transfer, the Link QR adopts a harmonic polygon (P3G) locking profile instead of a traditional cone. This shape eliminates all torsional play under load: even at 35 Nm, the wheel stays rigid against the base with zero parasitic movement. For sim racers sensitive to the slightest difference in feel between their hands, it's a detail that matters.

Installing the Link Quick Release on a Simucube 2

Simucube offers a dedicated retrofit kit: the Link Quick Release Adapter for Simucube 2 (~€60). It allows mounting the new QR system onto SC2 Sport, Pro, and Ultimate bases. The kit includes the Link Quick Release male part, the adapter plate, M5 screws (20 mm and 12 mm), and two hex keys (4 mm and 3 mm) — everything needed without any additional tooling.

Installation takes three steps: power off and unplug the base, remove the three hex screws from the original quick release (4 mm key), then secure the adapter plate with M5×20 screws and lock the Link QR male part with three M5×12 countersunk screws at approximately 5 Nm of torque. The whole process takes around ten minutes.

A second installation option exists if you want to retain compatibility with your existing SC2 steering wheels: the adapter mounts onto the original SQR1 female part, which stays on the base. Switching between the two systems then requires no further disassembly.

⚠ Important limitation

LightBridge is not supported on Simucube 2 bases. The adapter lets you fit the Link QR mechanism (and benefit from the P3G polygon lock), but the wireless power and data transfer remain unavailable — data still travels over Bluetooth or cable, as before. Only an SC3 base fully unlocks LightBridge.
